Two transcritional start sites were mapped in the upstream regulatory region of glgS. The glgSp1transcript was absent in a cya mutant. Two shorter fragments visible for the wild-type and the rpoS mutant might be incompletely synthesized reverse transcripts, but might also represent genuine transcriptional start sites indicative of a third and fourth promoters. If so, these promoters would be dependent on cAMP, since these transcripts are not found in the cya strain. glgSp1 is inactive in cya background. It is preceded by a putative CRP-binding site that is appropriately located and exhibits good homology to the consensus which probably compensates for the absence of a -35 site and the poor homology of the -10 site to the Sigma70 consensus. |
